I just recently purchased a Remington 1100 shotgun that has a serial number on the receiver that is 'L79xxxxV'. I'm trying to figure out when it was made and from what I read on a site it stated the first letter would be the month and then the first two numbers would be the year (so mine would be Feb 1979?!?). Dec 11, 2011 Model 1100 serial numbers (on the receiver) started with the number 1001. All but the early guns also have a prefix letter. All Model 1100 Remington shotguns were serial numbered in blocks of numbers. Each serial number has a suffix and the following indicates the meaning: V = 12ga. I'm looking at buying a used semi-auto shotgun, and I've always liked the older Remington 1100s. I've located a really nice one which is supposedly a 3' magnum. The barrel has a 3' chamber, but the info on the receiver suggests it is only for 2 3/4' shells - the receiver serial number ends with a 'V', and the receiver doesn't say 'magnum' anywhere.

Using barrel codes (such as those listed above) to date the manufacture are reliable on Remington rifles, as the company rarely changed barrels on a customer’s rifle.
Serial Numbers For Remington 1100 Shotguns
Using these barrel codes to date a shotgun is somewhat unreliable, as shotgun barrels are often interchanged at random. One needs to be sure that the barrel is original to the gun before trusting the Barrel Code listing, above.
